Container Garden 2012

I just finished planting this year's balcony garden. 

If you've followed this blog for a few years you'll know this is a really pared down version of the container farm. There just isn't as much room or sun on this balcony as the one I had in the past - so I'm sticking to a few sure things: peas, lettuce mix, chives, onions, and some Zinnias (for colour). Oh! And just for fun I planted some PEANUTS. I don't know if they'll work but it will be an interesting experiment. 

We're supposed to be getting a plot in a community garden this year too and I'll put the Sweet Potatoes in there... if we ever get a plot assigned to us...

Anyway, here are the "before" pictures:

I adore my peas...

Last year I kept a whole blog about my "balcony farm". This year I moved to a new, smaller balcony so my garden was drastically reduced. Still, I got a bunch of lettuce, lots of green onions, and several herbs are "on the grow". There's also a sweet potato and two "volunteer" tomato plants (that sprung up from last year's compost I guess). Next year I think shall just grow a shit-tonne of peas. Peas are what make me the happiest out there.

OK. Maybe some cilantro too... oh... and a couple of sweet potatoes (just because they are pretty).

My new balcony is much smaller than what I used to have so I had to limit the garden this year. It will be mostly salad greens and herbs... but I'm still growing snow peas because I really enjoyed watching them grow last year (and eating them too of course).

Those little fellas are eager to cling! I just put out a climbing structure last night and they are already wrapping around it this morning. So cool!

The only other big plant I'm growing this year is a sweet potato. I actually managed to get some small tubers in last year's containers but I think I started way too late this year. I'm mainly growing this because I think it's a pretty plant and I get a kick out starting things in my kitchen.
